Description: A shrub occurring on rocky slopes and sandy bluffs mainly in the central and northeastern U.S. Fruits mature in the fall and range in color from red to yellow or black to brown and are eaten by some species of wildlife. The foliage may be browsed by wildlife and some livestock. The plant is often used in western landscapes due to the striking contrast of the various colored fruit with the foliage. The fruits are edible and were once used with buffalo meat to make pemmican. |
